Kevin Azzopardi has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Authority for Integrity in Maltese Sport (AIMS) following a public call, the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation announced.

Mr Azzopardi brings with him three decades of experience in Maltese sport through various leadership roles. A graduate in Physical Education from the University of Malta in 2002, he spent 12 years teaching the subject at Mtarfa Boys Secondary School and Stella Maris College. In 2014, he was appointed Education Officer (Physical Education & Sport) within the same ministry, where he led an overhaul of the sector that now enjoys national priority status.

He was responsible for key initiatives including the National Sport School, the Sport Career Development Programme, and the Malta School Games.

Mr Azzopardi also holds a Master’s degree in Comparative Euro-Mediterranean Education Studies and is currently pursuing doctoral research at the University of Malta on the sociocultural identity that traditional sport gives to Maltese towns and villages.

His sporting background extends to football refereeing, having served as a referee for 18 years, including at international level, before taking on roles such as Director of Refereeing at the Malta FA, UEFA Referee Observer, and Referee Development Officer at Northumberland FA in the UK.

Since 2021, Mr Azzopardi has served as Secretary General of the Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC), where he played a central role in organising the 2023 Games of the Small States of Europe in Malta and in helping Malta and Gozo secure the bid to host the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games. He also contributed to Gozo’s membership in the International Island Games Association.

Within the MOC, he was Malta’s sole representative on sport integrity matters with the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Movement Unit on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competitions.
