Sustainability is more than just a trend; it’s a movement. As environmental and social awareness continue to shape consumer expectations, now is the perfect time for companies to put sustainability at the heart of everything they do.
The European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) is a unique opportunity for businesses to turn their commitment into action. By reducing, reusing, and recycling waste, companies can demonstrate true leadership and make a tangible impact on the environment. In 2024, several local businesses stood out with inspiring initiatives.
Lidl Malta, winner of the Business category, communicated the benefits of donating unsold but perfectly edible food to the Malta Food Bank Foundation. These donations were transformed into meals for individuals and families in need. Since the project began, over 26 tonnes of food have been saved, resulting in more than 86,600 meals distributed to those in need.

The Malta National Aquarium, first runner-up, with its witty mascot Trashia Packington, once again captured attention by focusing on food waste. Throughout the week, primary and secondary school students participated in interactive activities to learn practical ways to reduce food waste. Those unable to attend in person engaged through a social media quiz, ensuring the message reached a wider audience.

Bank of Valletta, on the other hand, highlighted the power of small, everyday changes to create a positive environmental impact. They summarised various initiatives, including digital efforts to reduce plastic credit card use and improve electronic payment systems. Employees participated in an internal sustainability quiz, with winners receiving vouchers. The bank also organised clean-up events throughout the year, reinforcing its commitment to environmental responsibility.

This year’s European Week for Waste Reduction takes place from 22nd to 30th November, with events happening across Europe. This year’s theme focuses on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), a growing concern in our tech-driven lives.
Electronic devices undoubtedly improve our quality of life, streamlining tasks, enhancing comfort, and enabling seamless communication. However, when improperly disposed of, e-waste creates serious environmental and health risks.
Toxic substances such as lead and mercury can leach into groundwater, pollute food sources, and damage air quality, endangering ecosystems and communities alike. In addition, poor management of e-waste leads to the unnecessary loss of valuable resources like gold and rare earth metals.
Yet, WEEE also presents an opportunity for businesses. Through well-thought actions, businesses can find ways to adopt circular economy practices, reduce waste, recover resources, and align with their sustainability goals.
While this year’s spotlight is on e-waste, participants are encouraged to explore any waste-related topic relevant to their business, as long as it promotes waste reduction.
