Costa Coffee’s outlet in Balzan is set to permanently close down, a statement from Christina Galea, CEO of the popular coffee shop franchise in Malta read on Monday.

“It’s bean fun,” the announcement was titled.

“Sadly, we are closing the Costa Coffee outlet in Balzan in order to make room for other new locations across our islands,” she said.

Ms Galea remarked that even though management is excited to continue increasing its locations towards the northern part of Malta, it is “sad to say goodbye” to one of the first Costa Coffee stores in Malta, having first opened back in 2012.

“Many of you have become long-standing regular customers with whom we have enjoyed sharing so many years and we hope you do find another location to satisfy your coffee cravings with the closest outlet just a couple of minutes away in Mrieħel,” she continued. Ms Galea added that there is also the option to order via delivery services.

“We thank you for being part of our journey and hope you will continue to be one of our truly valued customers,” she concluded.

The store’s final operating day will be 7th December 2023 (Thursday).

Costa Coffee first launched in Malta back in 2012 at the Malta International Airport, before it then opened two more stores in Balzan and at The Point, Sliema. It continued to spread across Malta, opening outlets in Valletta, Baystreet (Paceville), Marsaxlokk, St Julian’s, PAMA (Mosta), Mrieħel, and Sliema. The coffeeshop chain originated in the UK in 1971 and has more than 3,400 stores across over 31 countries.

The news of the Balzan store’s closure was met with mixed online reactions, with some stating that it is “rarely empty” and is a “good hub for people in the neighbourhood”. However, there have also been claims that it seemed to be “neglected” lately.
