Health Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne has congratulated Walter Busuttil on his appointment as Malta’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO).

The role of the CMO is responsible for the ongoing development, coordination and review of quality health care services provided to the public through the Department of Health while maintaining an ongoing process of consultation with stakeholders. The Chief Medical Officer provides strategic direction and advice for the national health system.

Dr Busuttil, who currently occupies the post of Medical Director within Mater Dei Hospital, takes over from Dennis Vella Baldacchino, who was nominated as the new Mental Health Commissioner on 1st October 2021 and will be taking up the new post as of December.

Dr Vella Baldacchino occupied the post of CMO within the Health Ministry for around 7 years.

Taking to social media to congratulate the new CMO, Mr Fearne wrote:

“Congratulations Dr Walter Busuttil on your appointment as Chief Medical Officer – convinced that your skills and experience will contribute in making our already excellent health service even better.

“Thank you Dr Vella Baldacchino for many years of sterling service.”
