Lawrence Zammit, Chairperson of Grand Harbour Marina, which regularly hosts superyachts, credits the company for putting Malta on the map for the luxurious vessels.

Speaking to Malta Stock Exchange CEO Simon Zammit during an episode of Executive Spotlight, the experienced businessman, who is also Co-Founder of market research firm misco, was forthright in his comments.

“The reason Malta is known for superyachting is because Grand Harbour Marina invested heavily,” he said.

“Our marketing spend on developing superyachting in Malta has not been small, and that should not be taken for granted.”

He touted the company’s “consistent” presence at boat shows under the banner of Camper & Nicholsons, a major yacht brokerage firm and the major shareholder in Grand Harbour Marina, as well as its hosting of the Bailli de Suffren race.

Mr Zammit said that these efforts have been “crucial” to Malta’s growing reputation as a favoured hub for superyachts.

Part of the attraction of the marina is the natural protection boats berthed there enjoy.

“I always say, the Knights knew what they were doing when they decided to place their ships there,” he said, with reference to the creek’s status as the main harbour for the navy of the Knights of St John.

“Of course, we are still impacted when there is rough weather, but far less than the other creeks in the Grand Harbour.”
