Italian supermarket giant Eurospin will officially land in Malta on Thursday 14th March, opening its first outlet in Mosta.

The announcement was made last Saturday, with the supermarket’s social media account stating that it will open its doors to the public at 7am this Thursday.

The supermarket will remain open until 10pm, in what is being described as a day filled with “activities and offers.” The opening event will feature a number of activities, including a bouncy castle for children, together with family entertainment and an aperitivo event.

Eurospin, known in Italy for being one of the country’s largest low-cost supermarket chains, will be opening its outlet just a few metres away from competitors Lidl at Triq id-Difiża Ċivili in Mosta.

From the looks of it, Lidl has been bracing itself for the opening of its Italian rival in such close proximity. Over recent weeks, it launched a series of deals specifically available at its Mosta outlet, a decision that received plenty of criticism. Additionally, last December, The Malta Independent reported that Lidl had applied to enlarge the outlet, extend its parking area, as well as storage facility and offices.

Eurospin’s new outlet will be accompanied by another supermarket in Marsa, with the number of outlets expected to increase to a total of five across Malta in the coming years, with a view to having 12 in the future. The Marsa supermarket will be constructed in the former Salv Bezzina industrial yacht yard, with a shopping mall and a fast-food drive-thru also being proposed in the area.

The launch of the renowned supermarket chain will see Malta’s retail offering continue to increase, with a number of supermarkets and smaller grocery stores being located in different corners of the country.
