Labour MEP Thomas Bajada has been named Rapporteur for the European Parliament’s Water Resilience Strategy Initiative, the Labour Party announced in a statement on Friday (today).

Mr Bajada described the appointment as a significant responsibility, particularly in the face of climate change and increasing pressures on global water resources.

“I am honoured to take on this immense responsibility at a time when the world is facing climate change and mounting pressures on our precious water resources, threatening humanity’s lifeline,” he said.

The Water Resilience Strategy Initiative aims to address several critical issues, including water efficiency, water scarcity, pollution, and investment in digitalisation and innovation within the water cycle. The initiative will serve as a foundation for the European Commission’s forthcoming European Water Resilience Strategy, which is set to be launched later this year.

Mr Bajada emphasised the need for a coordinated approach across different sectors, ensuring that water resilience becomes a core pillar of EU policy.

“This is a profound responsibility. Water must be valued for what it truly is: The foundation of life,” he stated.

He also pointed out that current water legislation remains fragmented across multiple sectors.

“By uniting these elements into a comprehensive strategy, the EU can deliver clear guidance for Member States, stakeholders, and citizens alike, ensuring effective and sustainable water management,” Mr Bajada added.
