The Corinthia Group has given a shoutout to Brian Micallef, a hotel concierge whose heroic actions saved a woman from drowning in St George’s Bay earlier this month.

On its website, Corinthia said that a mother and her daughter were taking a walk along the bay during a storm when powerful waves swept them both into the sea.

A member of staff from the Verdi MarinaHotel witnessed the incident and immediately raised the alarm through the hotel’s internal emergency channels, with emergency services contacted promptly.

However, Mr Micallef – who was at work in the lobby at Corinthia Hotel St George’s Bay – realised the urgency of the situation and decided step in.

“Without waiting for instructions—and despite the dangerous conditions—Brian entered the cold, raging sea to help,” the hospital group said.

“Showing exceptional bravery and presence of mind, he assisted in pulling both individuals back to shore, continuing to support rescue efforts until emergency responders arrived.”

Despite medical intervention, the mother tragically passed away, but her daughter survived.

“When you see someone being pulled by the sea, you don’t stop to think. You act. You try to help in any way you can,” Mr Micallef said, when asked how he overcame the danger of the storm.

After the incident, the concierge was formally received by Corinthia Group Chairman Alfred Pisani, who personally thanked Mr Micallef for the courage he displayed.

“Your quick thinking, selflessness, and personal courage in the face of danger reflect the highest standards of integrity and humanity,” he said.

"Such actions go beyond the call of duty and exemplify the values we hold dear at Corinthia. Your heroism not only saved a life but also serves as an inspiration to all of us. We are proud to have you as part of our team.”
