Charles Portelli, Front Office Manager at AX The Victoria Hotel, is retiring after 43 years serving in hospitality.

Mr Portelli has been working at the four-star hotel in Sliema since 2000, just three years after it opened its doors to guests. In a past interview about his career at AX, he recalled being introduced to the hotel by his sister-in-law.

Initially he was hesitant in applying for the position, as he already had a stable job in a nearby hotel.

“But the warmth and hospitality that greeted me, coupled with the refined and tasteful ambiance of the hotel, convinced me to take the leap of faith. And now, looking back, I can say with certainty that it was one of the best decisions I ever made,” Mr Portelli reflected.

Mr Portelli placed second runner up for the Hotel Worker of the Year Award at the Malta Tourism Authority 2022 Star Awards.

Helen Borg, Human Resources Manager at AX Victoria and The Palace, in a personal note on her LinkedIn, described Mr Portelli as a true professional and dedicated employee.

“Thank you for inspiring us and for also teaching us. Charles you will be missed. Enjoy your retirement and best wishes from all of us at AX Sliema,” Ms Borg said.

Others joined her in congratulating him on his retirement and describing him as their mentor.

“As I bid farewell to my working life, I’m proud of the contributions I’ve made and grateful for the memories and experiences that I’ve gained,” said Mr Portelli.
