With the closure of educational institutions, the limiting of people grouped together, and a general feeling of caution, a new way of delivering tutoring was needed.

“Many saw this situation as a threat. In reality, it is a threat. Some tutors found it difficult to change to a new method of teaching,” said Paul Caruana, founder of Paul Caruana Tuition.

“Teaching online and using digital methods in a system accustomed to teach face-to-face and to using traditional methods is not an easy task to adapt to, in particular for those who feel they are not digitally literate or not competent enough in digital techniques,” he added.

Emphasising that the current COVID-19 landscape has posed a challenge to all generations, even students, Mr Caruana highlighted how “they could no longer rely on direct contact with the tutor especially when they were faced with difficulty.

“Obviously, different subjects offer different challenges. The teaching of some subjects was easier adapt to this new situation than others,” he added.

Mr Caruana remarked that his experience in photography and working on publication proved to be an asset in adapting to the requirements of teaching his subjects onlne.

“Being accustomed to draw diagrams on the computer helped me in the teaching of the subjects of Accounting, Business Studies, Economics and Marketing.

“I could easily adapt myself to drawing diagrams not only digitally but also in real time online while delivering the lesson. The same can be said for my competence in word processing and spread sheets.

“In any situation, which is in itself a threat, one should also look for the silver lining. One can always extract opportunities from threats.”
