In the dynamic and fiercely competitive world of events, consistently providing outstanding, tailored experiences is what sets an excellent service provider apart from the rest. At the heart of Bastions continued success is a firm commitment to detail, a deep appreciation of place, and a team driven by passion – values that Cluster Sales Manager Elena Micallef Borg knows all too well.

With over four decades of experience in hospitality, Ms Micallef Borg brings not only a remarkable depth of industry knowledge but also an intuitive understanding of client needs – skills honed from years of hands-on experience, beginning as early as age six at her late father’s diving school.

From those humble beginnings, her journey led her through hotels, tourism studies in Paris, and a return to Malta’s hospitality scene working at various leading DMCs and hotels. For the past six years, she has been an integral part of Bastions, leading the charge in delivering bespoke events with a personal touch.

At Bastions, every event is treated as a unique opportunity to create something memorable. Whether orchestrating an intimate private dinner or managing the complexities of a large-scale wedding or corporate gala, the team approaches each project with the same degree of care and attention.

“We genuinely put ourselves in the clients’ shoes,” says Ms Micallef Borg. “Our sales team adopts every event as if it were our own, which creates a strong sense of ownership from the very beginning.”

This client-centric approach begins with active listening; understanding the client’s vision, preferences, and constraints. The event is then tailor-made to reflect their goals and personality, ensuring no two events are ever the same. “Time is precious,” she adds, “and our team is committed to swift, effective communication to help clients feel supported at every step.”

One of the company’s key differentiators lies in its portfolio of venues: MUŻA Restaurant, Grotto Tavern, Ostrica at Gillieru, and Bottegin Palazzo Xara. Each space offers a distinctive atmosphere, blending elements of history, art, nature, and coastal beauty to elevate every gathering into a curated experience.

“These aren’t just event venues,” Ms Micallef Borg explains. “They’re living, breathing spaces with stories and character.”

MUŻA Restaurant, housed in a former residence of the Italian Knights and now the National Art Museum, offers a stunning backdrop enriched by art and history, making it ideal for both corporate and social events. Bottegin Palazzo Xara, steeped in grandeur, presents an array of rooms adaptable to any event style, from formal dinners to creative showcases.

Ostrica at Gillieru

Ostrica at Gillieru, with its awe-inspiring sea views and fluid indoor-outdoor layout, is perfect for scenic celebrations and relaxed corporate gatherings alike. Last but certainly not least, Grotto Tavern, a Michelin-recommended venue with a natural cave setting, offers something truly extraordinary for those seeking a one-of-a-kind ambiance.

Helping clients choose the right space is a key part of the Bastions process. By evaluating the type of event, the number of guests, and the overall vision, the team expertly matches each client with the venue that best aligns with their goals.

For Bastions, a venue is not just a location, but rather an integral part of the overall guest experience. Its settings are intentionally chosen to amplify the atmosphere, engage the senses, and leave a lasting impression.

“Each venue brings something invaluable to the table,” Ms Micallef Borg notes. “MUŻA Restaurant and Bottegin Palazzo Xara elevate events with cultural and historical gravitas, while Ostrica and Grotto Tavern inspire with their natural beauty.''

Whether it’s a networking session by the sea, a product launch in an art museum, or a formal banquet in a historic palazzo, the team meticulously crafts each element of the event to harmonise with its surroundings. This synergy between space and story is what transforms good events into unforgettable moments.

Of course, no great event is complete without exceptional food. Bastions' in-house catering is a stronghold of its offering, backed by a skilled culinary team led by Executive Head Chef Duncan Camilleri Zammit. Supporting him are the Head Chefs of each venue: Robert Gauci at MUŻA, Nikolai Abela at Grotto Tavern, Mark Cauchi at Ostrica, and Pablo Diogo at Bottegin Palazzo Xara.

These chefs bring a wealth of experience from top-tier hotels and restaurants, each contributing their own signature flair to Bastions' menus. “We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all,” Ms Micallef Borg emphasises. “Every menu is crafted specifically for the event’s style, whether it’s a sophisticated wedding banquet or a streamlined business luncheon.”

Staying attuned to the latest culinary trends while delivering consistent quality, the team is known for its creativity, flexibility, and deep respect for both global flavours and local ingredients.

In an industry where competition is fierce and expectations high, Bastions continues to stand out, not through grand gestures alone, but through the consistent excellence of its details.

“What really sets us apart,” Ms Micallef Borg reflects, “is our genuine passion – for our venues, our team, our food, and most of all, for our clients.”

This passion translates into a sense of authenticity that clients can feel. From the first conversation to the final farewell, every interaction is infused with warmth, professionalism, and a commitment to making the experience exceptional.

“Our clients return to us time and time again; not just because of the settings or the food, but because they know they can trust us. They recommend us because they’ve seen the difference care makes.”
