It hasn’t been too long since the entire globe was on maximum alert when it comes to hygiene and cleanliness. The pandemic brought with it two years of heightened attention to our surroundings as we were shown in minute detail the procedures we ought to carry out to ensure our homes and places of work were sufficiently safe. Luckily, the virus is now well under control and perhaps the world is glad to see fewer sanitising stations installed in every corner, yet the need for high quality cleaning remains, especially in certain environments.

Servizi Malta, a local cleaning company, specialises in promising a high-end result based on international best practices. “What appears to be clean, does not necessarily measure up well to specific standards,” states Jason Degiorgio, Director and Founder of Servizi Malta. Mr Degiorgio runs the company which has affiliates in Italy and has been in operation locally since 2008.

“We take extreme pride in what we do. In fact, we ensure that the environments we are responsible for, meet the highest cleanliness industry standards. That is why we are proudly responsible for the hygiene of a long list of sensitive locations around Malta and Gozo,” Mr Degiorgio notes.

With more than three decades of experience in the cleaning and disinfection sector, Mr Degiorgio brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. Apart from being the founder of Servizi Malta which has set itself as a leader in the industry, he also spearheaded the successful international expansion of another company he founded, Sanondaf, which operates in 15 countries across five continents. Moreover, he is actively engaged in two other prominent enterprises specialising in automation systems and pest control services.

Servizi Malta uses innovative cleaning solutions that promise higher quality results, while saving on resources.

“For example, while cleaning a room, our personnel will not resort to using the usual equipment that would normally be associated with cleaning practices. For instance, cloths used for cleaning are pre-wetted with chemicals and staff is not required to add any water or detergent on location. This is because all materials are pre-prepared, according to established procedures, ensuring that the right amount of chemicals are used, limiting waste and damage to the environment,” Mr Degiorgio explains.

“Most importantly our procedures get into very strict detail to ensure that no cross-contamination occurs during the process. Not unlike the differently coloured chopping boards used for different foods in a professional kitchen, different locations within a building will require specific equipment and processes. Environments such as bathrooms and kitchens will naturally offer a greater chance for cross-contamination, so these require specialised procedures that determine how they should be cleaned. Finally, materials are used exclusively for one room each, to ascertain the highest level of hygiene.”

Mr Degiorgio is clear about Servizi Malta not being the cheapest option. “We know that there are cheaper operators on the market and some clients might be satisfied with their level of service. With us however, we are bound by a certain standard of quality which we cannot compromise for the sake of competition.”

In fact, Servizi Malta is qualified to carry out cleaning operations in sensitive environments. “We are proud to say that we are responsible for cleaning the majority of hospitals and clinics in Malta. that includes nearly all Government-run hospitals and private clinics – practically all of the country’s primary health sector. Understandably, hygiene in such locations goes beyond the place looking clean, as this includes medical level disinfection, which the company and its staff are qualified to carry out,” Mr Degiorgio expounds.

Servizi Malta is also responsible for the round-the-clock cleanliness of the Malta International Airport, including security areas, offices, and public spaces. “At MIA alone, we dedicate a 200-strong compliment of staff to ensure the highest level of hygiene, 24hrs, seven days a week. The fact that the Malta International Airport consistently ranks highly on the international Airport Quality Awards (AQA), which put a considerable weight on cleanliness, is a great honour for us.”

Servizi Malta is ISO certified in three areas, namely management, occupational health and safety, and environment management systems. This further underlines the company’s dedication towards doing things correctly.

The company is also adamant to set the right example in terms of employer practices. “While around 80 per cent of our employees are non-Maltese, we are keen to offer the exact same conditions to every last employee. In fact, all of our team members are employed with us, as they avail themselves of all the rights associated with employment according to Maltese laws - including leave, time off, sick leave, bonuses, national insurance contributions and the rest. While we know that some companies get creative to bypass these practices, and save on their expenses, we take pride in treating our staff the best we can,” Mr Degiorgio continues.

Asked about future prospects for Servizi Malta, Mr Degiorgio explains that growth is steadily on the cards.

“We want to continue strengthening our position in the large-scale market. However, we are also interested in looking at smaller specialised clients who will certainly find our dedication and superior quality services extremely attractive to their needs,” Mr Degiorgio concludes.
