Video footage paying tribute to Valletta’s iconic Prefo café was shared this morning by a local, after it was revealed that it would be closing its doors after being in business for around 80 years.

While the news sparked a public outcry with many taking to social media to share their dismay, a Times of Malta report says the third generation of the Bezzina family, which has run the café since the 1940s, is considering stepping in following the public reaction.

Public concern was expressed that the South Street café would be replaced by yet another hip eatery, resulting in 80-year-old Salvatore Bezzina, known as Sonny, making reassurances that Prego will remain within the family.

The Times reports Sonny as saying that while the entry of a third party could be a possibility, the café would be kept in the Bezzina family – the original owners.

Sonny retired after working at the café since he was 16 and ran the establishment with his two brothers. The disruption caused by COVID-19 reportedly caused the family to call it a day.

The property was first opened by Sonny’s father, Salvatore, in the early 1940’s while the name Prego we know today was given to the café in 1957.

Sonny’s son, Patrick Bezzina, said his eight siblings and cousins are considering taking it over, despite not being accustomed to the catering industry.

Patrick, who is a chief officer at a technology company, commented that he would not run the place himself, but would operate it as a side-gig.

The Times reports that Patrick has recognised its uniqueness, and that the plan would be to reopen in its current state with some improvements.
