“Regardless of the result, I hope to see a more prosperous America than what we are currently seeing,” remarked Michael Camilleri Kamsky on this morning’s episode of The Boardroom.
Mr Camilleri Kamsky was discussing the upcoming US election, set to take place on 3rd November, and how the result can impact the rest of the world.
He is an authority in the travel and tourism industry, having started his career in the airline industry.
Mr Camilleri Kamsky joined Starwood Hotels and Resorts as Director of Sales and Marketing at The Westin Dragonara Resort in 2003, and later became General Manager of the property in 2007.
Before being headhunted for the Westin Dragonara Resort he was responsible for starting the daily Emirates flights to Malta and was instrumental in establishing Virtu Ferries.
His career has taken him on various overseas work experiences including in Switzerland, France as well as Australia. Mr Camilleri Kamsky is the Honorary President of the Federation of Associations of Travel & Tourism Agents and a director on the board of the Malta Tourism Authority.
On the upcoming election between incumbent Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Joe Biden, Mr Camilleri Kamsky remarked that since 1932, an incumbent US president has never failed to win re-election, unless a recession took place during their time in office.
“You either like Trump or hate him,” he said, adding that if Biden were to win, it would be likely that many Trump-policies enacted over the past four years would be rolled back, similarly to the action Trump has taken with regards to Obama-era policy.
Mr Camilleri Kamsky believes a Biden victory will likely translate into increased taxes in the US, however he noted a Democratic party commitment to inject $7-8 trillion into the economy, especially to build infrastructure.
“On an international scale, a Biden victory may boost collective action on climate change and the pandemic. Nevertheless, it won’t be a magic return to an era of unquestioned American primacy.”
Mr Camilleri Kamsky believes a Trump victory looks unlikely, however, he called on the experience of 2016 when Trump was behind in the polls, but a Hillary Clinton e-mail scandal at the last minute tipped the balance in his favour.
“Much trade and international relations have weakened be under the current administration. A prime example of this is china – the two have been locked in bitter trade battles and this has seen the US impose tariffs of billions of dollars’ worth of one another.”
Lastly, Mr Camilleri Kamsky expressed concern that should the election result be contested and taken before the supreme court, this would cause America to stall.
“If America had to stall, the rest of the world would stall with it.”
