Popular local food store and bakery Maypole has pledged in a press conference yesterday to reduce the amount of plastic they use by 1.5 million in the coming year.
Company directors Mario Debono and Sebastian Debono affirmed that, “we never wanted our success to interfere with the environment, so we have always done our best to keep our operations environmentally friendly.”
The company has already introduced several environmentally friendly measures in its day-to-day operations, including recycling procedures within their factories and outlets, an investment in solar panels at the factory, as well as a waste collection system in its bakeries, which converts waste into energy to be used to generate heat or power air conditioning systems.
In so doing, Maypole has so far reduced 200 tons of carbon per year from its operations. The latest measure will see that almost all plastic bags are removed from the company, thus taking it back to its roots when Maltese bread was handed to customers in paper bags.
Environment and Climate Change Minister Aaron Farrugia showed his support for the initiative, praising Maypole for the eco-conscious strides, adding that this is a step in the right direction and will contribute to Government’s plan to reduce Malta’s waste.
