At Europe’s premier entrepreneurship festival for students, Maltese startup MediMynd placed third in the Innovation of the Year category, while fellow local team Simplex was commended for its strong pitch and business approach.

The student teams participated in Gen-E 2025, held in Athens between 1st and 3rd July.

MediMynd and Simplex, part of JA Malta’s StartUp and Company Programmes respectively, stood out among over 2,000 ventures and 1,000 participants at Europe’s student entrepreneurship event.

Back in May, both teams were recognised during JA Malta’s 36th Annual Finals and Awards Night, an event celebrating the entrepreneurial achievements of over 250 students from 12 educational institutions across the country.

MediMynd, from Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education (SMI), is tackling medication non-adherence among Europe’s ageing population with a smart, integrated system that promotes independence, reduces hospital visits, and supports EU goals for health and sustainable communities.

Simplex, from St Aloysius College Sixth Form, has developed an eco-friendly pill-popper made from off-cut wood, designed to help the elderly and people with conditions like Parkinson’s open blister packs more easily.

MediMynd placed third place in Innovation of the Year and the FedEx Access Award, confirming the project’s global potential. Simplex, while not placing, earned praise for their strong pitch and business acumen.

Speaking about the results, JA Malta CEO Matthew Caruana said, “this year’s Gen-E not only celebrated innovation; it affirmed the power of young people to lead change in their communities.”

He continued: “We are incredibly proud of MediMynd and Simplex, whose dedication and creativity have showcased Malta’s entrepreneurial spirit on a European platform.”

JA Malta’s Company and StartUp Programmes, supported by organisations including HSBC Malta Foundation and Jobsplus, provide practical entrepreneurship education to students across the country.

JA Worldwide was recently nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize and plays an important role in preparing youth for the realities of the modern workforce through experiential learning in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and employability.
