The University of Malta has recorded its strongest performance to date in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, maintaining its global band while registering improvements across most indicators,  with the most notable gains seen in its collaboration with industry.

In this year’s edition, THE evaluated more than 2,000 research-intensive universities across 115 countries and territories, with 99 new institutions added to the rankings. Despite the expanded field, the University of Malta featured for the seventh consecutive year and achieved its highest overall score to date (35.5–38.9).

THE rankings assess universities across five pillars: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, Industry, and International Outlook. The University registered improvements in four of these five categories.

  • Teaching improved from 23.9 to 24.9
  • Research Environment rose from 17.3 to 18.2
  • Research Quality increased from 61 to 61.6
  • Industry saw the most significant gain, climbing from 33.3 to 36.8
  • International Outlook dipped slightly from 57.8 to 56.2, but remains the University’s strongest area, placing it 716th globally in this category

The sharpest improvement in the Industry pillar reflects the University’s growing collaboration with industry partners — a priority embedded in its newly launched Strategy 2026–2030.

The University also recorded strong results in the THE World University Rankings by Subject, with its best performance once again in Business and Economics, maintaining a position in the 301–400 band for the second consecutive year.

Other subject rankings for the University of Malta include:

  • Arts and Humanities: 501–600
  • Medical and Health: 601–800
  • Computer Science: 801–1000
  • Education Studies: 401–500
  • Engineering: 801–1000
  • Life Sciences: 601–800
  • Physical Sciences: 601–800
  • Psychology: 501–600

The improved showing across these categories aligns with the University’s Strategic Plan for 2026–2030, reinforcing its position as Malta’s leading higher education institution while enhancing its international profile.
