Malta is levelling up its presence in the global gaming industry as two international video game studios announce plans to set up shop on the island.
The announcement comes ahead of Playcon 2025, Malta’s video game development and esports expo. Organised by GMR with the support of GamingMalta and the Government, the expo, now in its fifth edition, was officially inaugurated earlier today.
Feenix, a studio focused on user-generated content and known for its collaborations with global IPs such as Roblox and Paddington Bear, is officially launching at Playcon this October. The studio has plans to hire 30 highly skilled professionals in Malta as it expands its global footprint.
Hand Rock Studio, a new division of the UK-based Out of the Bit group, is planting roots in Malta with the launch of its first dedicated game development studio.
The 2024 edition of Playcon attracted more than 25,000 attendees, featured over 60 exhibitors and generated upwards of 24 million online impressions.
Taking place between 8th and 12th October at the MFCC, Playcon 2025 will place strong emphasis on education, talent development and cross-sector collaboration.
“Playcon is at the forefront of Mata’s vision to grow its gaming and esports sector,” CEO of GamingMalta Ivan Filletti said.
“The event created a unique space where local developers, plays and industry innovators come together to showcase their talent and drive the sector forward. It’s about more than just business – it’s about building a thriving gaming community that will fuel creativity, innovation and long-term growth for Malta,” he concluded.
