Secondary school students Thea Muscat and Owen Bartolo have been selected as Malta’s national champions for the European Money Quiz (EMQ) 2025, set to take place in Brussels on 22nd and 23rd May.
This marks the fifth consecutive year that the Malta Bankers’ Association (MBA), in collaboration with the Department of Accounting and Business Studies within the Directorate for STEM and VET Programmes at the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, has organised the national edition of the quiz to select Malta’s representatives for the EMQ final.
The national selection took place on 25th February via the Kahoot! platform, with around 400 students from state, church, and independent schools participating simultaneously in a rigorous test of their financial knowledge. Thea and Owen emerged as national winners, having answered the most questions correctly in the shortest amount of time.
Together, they will form Malta’s national team and represent the country at the EMQ, joining participants from other nations in the event hosted by the European Banking Federation. The MBA will be covering the students’ flight and accommodation expenses for their trip to Brussels.
The EMQ is a key initiative of European Money Week (EMW), held annually in March. It is the largest pan-European competition aimed at enhancing financial literacy among students aged 13 to 15. Launched in 2017 and coordinated by the European Banking Federation, the EMQ is supported by national banking associations in over 30 countries, including Malta, as part of broader efforts to promote financial education.
