Malta's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Professor Stephen Montefort, has been appointed Chairperson of the Commonwealth Secretariat's Board of Governors, taking up the role on 1st July 2026 for a two-year term.

Prof. Montefort has served on the Board of Governors since assuming office as Malta's High Commissioner to the UK in January 2025. His appointment places a Maltese diplomat at the helm of the body responsible for overseeing the governance of the Commonwealth Secretariat, which serves all 56 Commonwealth member states.

The Board of Governors is composed of the High Commissioners of each Commonwealth country and is responsible for approving the Secretariat's strategic plans, work programmes and budgets.

Welcoming the appointment, Commonwealth Secretary-General Hon. Shirley Botchwey said Prof. Montefort would play an important role as the organisation continues implementing its Strategic Plan 2025–2030 and broader reform agenda during a period of global uncertainty and slowing economic growth.

Alongside Prof. Montefort's appointment, Guyana's High Commissioner, His Excellency Rajendra Singh, has assumed the role of Chairperson of the Executive Committee.

The Chairperson of the Board of Governors and the representative of the Commonwealth Chair-in-Office both sit on the Executive Committee, which makes policy recommendations to the Board and oversees the Secretariat's budgets and audit functions.

Prof. Montefort is a distinguished physician and academic who, alongside his diplomatic responsibilities, serves as Professor of Medicine, Academic Head of the Department of Medicine and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Malta.

Earlier this year, he was awarded a gold medal by then-Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela in recognition of his longstanding contribution to Malta's healthcare system and medical education during commemorations marking the 350th anniversary of Malta's Medical School.

Since relocating to London as Malta's High Commissioner, Prof. Montefort has also strengthened ties between the Maltese and British business communities. In 2025, he accepted an invitation to serve as Honorary President of the Malta Business Network (MBN), supporting the organisation's efforts to foster commercial collaboration and promote Maltese business interests in the UK.
