The President of Malta has officially appointed Simone Grech and Rachel Montebello as Judges of the Superior Courts, following the recommendations of the Judicial Appointments Committee (JAC).

The appointments were made in accordance with the public call issued on 5th August 2025 by the Minister for Justice and Construction Sector Reform, Jonathan Attard, for the appointment of two new judges and two new magistrates.

17 expressions of interest for the two judicial posts were evaluated by the JAC during a sitting held on 4th October 2025. The Committee subsequently submitted two reports to the President on 10th October 2025 and 20th October 2025, listing the names of candidates deemed most suitable and meritorious for the roles.

From the first report, the President selected Simone Grech from among the three shortlisted candidates – Charmaine Galea, Simone Grech, and Rachel Montebello. From the second report, the President chose Rachel Montebello, whose name appeared alongside Charmaine Galea and Gabriella Vella.
