Reno Borg has been appointed as Malta’s new Information and Data Protection Commissioner, taking over from Mr Ian Deguara following the end of his term of office.

Dr Borg took the oath of office on Thursday, with his appointment being valid for a period of five years with effect from 24th April 2026.

The Commissioner will carry out duties in accordance with the Data Protection Act, Chapter VI of the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679, the Freedom of Information Act, the Re Use of Public Sector Information Act, and other applicable laws of Malta.

Dr Reno Borg has served as a lawyer for over 30 years. He graduated from the University of Malta. Throughout the years Dr Borg worked in the Office of the Attorney General, served as chairman of several state entities, Chairman of BOV and as arbiter under the Social Security Act. He also lectured civil law at the University of Malta.

The Minister for Justice and Reform of the Construction Sector, Jonathan Attard said that “the taking of the oath of office by Dr Reno Borg marks an important moment in the continued strengthening of Malta’s data protection and information governance framework. I congratulate Dr Borg on his appointment.

"His strong legal background and extensive experience, including his role as Malta’s first Financial Services Arbiter, equip him well to carry out this important office with independence, professionalism and integrity, in the interest of citizens, public authorities and the rule of law.”

The Government expresses its appreciation to Ian Deguara for his service and contribution during his tenure as Information and Data Protection Commissioner.
