Michael Bonello, Director and CEO of RE/MAX Alliance Group has written an open statement to the Prime Minister on social media, commenting that “it is a few steps too short”.
He acknowledged that the added measures, to cost Government up to €70 million monthly, are “a step in the right direction.”
Prime Minister Robert Abela’s most generous measures are going to companies in a list of critical industries, seen to be worst hit by the COVID-19 pandemic disruptions. All non-essential retail and services based businesses must remain shut and a travel ban is currently in place.
Dr Abela’s Government will be providing €800 per month for each worker, some 60,000, in the ‘critical industries’. Private employers will bridge the remainder of the wage for those earning more, able to earn a maximum €1,200 monthly wage.
Those not in the list will have to contend with €350 subsidy for each worker needing to quarantine, and up to two days per week of employee wages paid by the Government, with a maximum wage capped at €800.
Real Estate is among the industries which will not benefit from the latest measures. As a result Mr Bonello said:
“Many families are still feeling neglected. Many, who like others contributed to the economic growth of this country. All property Sales / Letting Agents in Malta are self-employed and COVID19 has wiped out their ability to earn their keep. The Government must not differentiate between industries in the face of such a National Crisis.
“We need your help!”
