Following the news of the death of US Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Central Bank of Malta Governor, Mario Vella, paid tribute to the “eminent US jurist [and] indefatigable defender of civil rights and gender equality”.

Justice Bader Ginsburg passed away at the age of 87 due to pancreatic cancer-related complications and has battled cancer four separate times throughout her life. Her death caused an outpouring of grief, particularly so by liberals and advocates for civil rights and equality.

Recalling a meeting with the former Supreme Court Justice, Mr Vella said that:

“On 6 June 2017, I was honoured to host ‘the Notorious RBG’ - as she is affectionately known to many of those who share her vision - to lunch at the Central Bank of Malta together with a few friends.

“RBG may have been a mere 1.55m tall, but her intellectual and moral stature enabled her to tower and soar light years above her detractors. May her shining example serve as a global beacon.”

The US-civil rights champion is best known for her fight towards equality among sexes, and in later years for her sharp and dissenting judgements on the Supreme Court.
