Prof. Frank Bezzina has been elected as the 82nd Rector of the University of Malta, following an extraordinary meeting of the institution’s Council held on Thursday (today).

He was the sole nominee presented to Council and received unanimous support. His nomination was put forward by 15 Council members, including representatives from Senate and the student body, as well as members elected by academic, administrative, technical and industrial staff, and others appointed to represent the wider national interest.

Prof. Bezzina is set to begin his five-year term on 1st July 2026, succeeding Alfred J. Vella, who has served in the role since 2016.

During his address to Council, titled Knowledge for the common good, Prof. Bezzina outlined a vision of the University as a strategic national institution that plays an active role in shaping Malta’s future. He emphasised the importance of collaboration with communities, industry, and both public and private entities, while maintaining academic independence.

A key priority highlighted in his address is the continued strengthening of teaching and research standards, supported by robust quality assurance systems. He stressed the importance of fostering a strong research culture in which both fundamental and applied work inform teaching, policy, and professional practice, while also contributing to innovation and broader societal development.

Prof. Bezzina also underscored the role of education in cultivating curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity, positioning these as essential drivers of social, economic, and environmental progress. He indicated that the University should offer a holistic experience for both students and staff, grounded in principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Looking ahead, he pointed to the need for long-term strategic planning, diversified funding streams, and sustainable investment. He also highlighted the importance of aligning institutional structures and policies with strategic goals, reducing administrative barriers, and supporting staff in achieving improved outcomes.
