Maltese volunteer Douglas Barbaro-Sant is on the road back into Ukraine as part of his voluntary actions to help support residents of the country facing a humanitarian crisis.
He took to social media to share his experience on Friday morning, as he approached the Ukrainian border with Moldova, from where he has centred his preparatory efforts, and asked viewers to maintain their support.
The Managing Director of corporate events service provider MI Malta, Mr Barbaro-Sant, left for Moldova less than two weeks ago with his cousin Lorna, aiming to assist some of the Ukrainian people displaced by Russia’s invasion of the country.
The volunteer left Malta to join an NGO called Dancu Tabata in Moldova, which supports food distribution and evacuations. The initial plan was to help Ukrainian women and children fleeing from the Southern town of Mykolaiv, which was the site of much fighting early on in the invasion.
He has already crossed in Ukraine multiple times, delivering food to Odessa, and shared the “somber atmosphere of what used to be a bustling city.”
In his time in the country and his neighbour, he has met a number of “superheroes without capes,” including a number of Moldovan people who he says have done an “amazing” job supporting the NGOs efforts with logistical efforts.
The team is purchasing and delivering the food itself and in the latest journey this morning, Mr Barboro-Sant shares it has gathered “well over three tons of food and supplies.”
