Maltese-American politician Pete Buttigieg confirmed on Tuesday that President-elect Joe Biden has officially asked him to serve as US Secretary of Transportation.

Should the Senate approve the nomination, Mr Buttigieg would become the first openly gay member of a US presidential cabinet

Taking to social media, Mr Buttigieg wrote:

“Innovation in transportation helped build my hometown, and it propels our country. This is a moment of tremendous opportunity, and now is the time to build back better through modern and sustainable infrastructure that creates millions of good-paying union jobs, revitalizes communities, and empowers all Americans to thrive.

“If confirmed, I will work every day to deliver on this vision for the American people.”

On Tuesday, President-elect Biden was confirmed by the electoral college, causing many high-profile Republic figures to concede President Trump’s defeat.
