Founded in 2021 by two engineers and entrepreneurs, David Sciberras of Invent 3D and Nicholas Borg Calleja of Marine Hound, ELM Fabrication aims to revolutionise the manufacturing sector by providing large-scale 3D printing solutions.
Combining mechanical and electrical engineering, software development, and additive manufacturing, the company has developed a 3D printer designed to address industrial-scale production needs.
The company has secured funding to fuel its research and development efforts. Over the years, it has benefited from various accelerators, TOSFA funds, the Xjenza Research Excellence Programme, and, most recently, EIT Manufacturing, accumulating a total of €345,000. Additionally, €60,000 in personal funds have been injected into the project to bring the first version of its pioneering 3D printer to life.
At the heart of ELM Fabrication’s innovation is its 2m x 2m x 6m 3D printer, which is engineered to print using recycled materials. Unlike off-the-shelf solutions, this printer has been designed, built, and configured entirely in-house.
With a commitment to the circular economy, ELM Fabrication’s technology can process a wide range of granulated materials, including ground-up plastic bottles.
This capability opens new opportunities for sustainable manufacturing across multiple industries, allowing businesses to innovate while reducing costs and enhancing production efficiency.
Though closely associated with Invent 3D, ELM Fabrication operates as a separate entity with its own team of talented engineers and designers.
Mr Sciberras, who serves as the company’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasised that the goal is to not only develop and sell these machines globally but also to continuously refine the technology through further iterations.
The company has already set its sights on a V2 model, with ongoing R&D efforts to improve and expand the capabilities of its large-scale 3D printing solutions. Among the potential applications are automotive parts, micro homes, office spaces, and urban furniture, highlighting the versatility of the technology.
ELM Fabrication is now actively seeking to raise up to €500,000 in a seed funding round to finalise the product and take it to market.
To showcase its technology to potential investors, the company will be hosting an exclusive, invite-only event at the Invent 3D headquarters, where attendees can witness the 3D printer in action and engage directly with the founders.
Interested investors are encouraged to reach out to the founders for a copy of the pitch deck before 30th January 2025.
Additionally, Maltese resident business angels qualify for the MIMCOL Investment Scheme, making this an attractive opportunity for those looking to support cutting-edge innovation in the manufacturing sector.
