Maltese composer, pianist, and teacher Alex Vella Gregory, known for his popular musical act 'Ċikku l-Poplu', has received exciting recognition this week: the first movement of his Violin Sonata has been officially added to the grade eight violin syllabus of Trinity College London’s board exams.

Announcing the news on his Facebook page, Mr Vella Gregory described it as the second piece of “good news this week,” following the recent inclusion of his paper on Malta's 16th century liturgical music in the volume 'Striking a Chord', published by Malta Libraries.

Speaking to WhosWho.mt, Mr Vella Gregory shared his excitement for this recognition, describing it not only as a personal milestone but also as a proud moment of representing Malta on an international platform. He praised Trinity College London as an institution of global repute, noting that this inclusion brings valuable exposure to his work.

I must admit that I have known about this for quite some time, as the process is a lengthy one,” he said.

He credited the achievement to the efforts of his UK publishers: “Thanks to the hard work of my UK publishers, United Music Publishing Limited, they submitted my music to the Trinity College Exams Board for their consideration, and thankfully it paid off.”

When asked about the realities of being a full-time musician in Malta, Mr Vella Gregory acknowledged the challenges, admitting that the journey can be tough, but emphasised that perseverance and dedication do eventually pay off.

He explained that the Violin Sonata was originally composed in 2006, published in 2021, and has now, nearly two decades after its composition, found its place in the Trinity exam syllabus.

“I can assure you that back in 2006 I had no clue it would ever get published internationally, let alone get selected,” he explained.

Reflecting on his journey, he offered his advice to aspiring musicians:
Choose happiness over money any day. The world needs beauty now more than ever –  to dedicate your life to beauty is a noble aim.”

Mr Vella Gregory has also played a key role in reviving the traditional Carnival performance of 'Il-Qarċilla' in 2014  – a form of comic street theatre known for its witty political and social satire.

Trinity College London, represented in over 60 countries, is an international exam board for the performing arts and English language.
