On Thursday, Malta International Airport (MIA) plc was given the Best Airport Award in the five to 10 million category by Airports Council International (ACI) EUROPE.

On LinkedIn, MIA CEO Alan Borg shared that it was his honour to accept the award on behalf of the airport's team.

“Thank you ACI EUROPE for recognising our team’s resilience, strategic foresight and commitment to sustainability,” he wrote, while subsequently thanking all the “dedicated team and stakeholders.”

Held in Istanbul, Türkiye, the 34th edition of the annual ACI EUROPE Annual Congress and General Assembly recognised different airports across Europe.

ACI EUROPE is the European region of Airports Council International (ACI), the sole global professional association of airport operators.

It represents over 500 airports in 55 countries and its members facilitate over 90 per cent of commercial air traffic in Europe.

The 2024 award winners were chosen for implemented strategies to push the airport business model into new territories, fostering new value creation models and embracing transformation and flexibility while taking care of the people and planet.

Awards were spread across five categories: Digital Transformation, Eco-Innovation, HR Excellence, World Business Partner and Best Airport (which was subsequently split into five additional awards according to airport size.

In a statement, ACI shared that the airport was commended for “a comprehensive and consistent approach enabling them to recover strongly from the pandemic, both in traffic and financial terms."

Additionally, it highlighted that the airport demonstrated a collaborative approach with customers and staff alike.

“Judges noted their proven track record, efficient operations, as well as their motivated team – with sustainability excellence, and innovation at its core,” the statement continued.

Other winners within this category include Torino Airport (under five million passengers), London Luton Airport (10 to 25 million passengers), Avinor Oslo Airport (25 to 40 million passengers), Istanbul Airport as well as Rome Fiumicino Airport ( co-winners of the over 40 million passenger category).
