Starting in 2026, SAS – Scandinavian Airlines will entrust all base maintenance layovers for its Airbus A350 fleet aircrafts to Lufthansa Technik Malta.
SAS is a leading airline for Scandinavia, operating hubs in Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm.
The announcement follows Lufthansa Technik’s recent €22 million investment in its Malta operations, including the construction of a new state-of-the-art wide-body aircraft hangar adjacent to its existing facilities in Luqa.
This decision also follows a successful base maintenance event for an SAS A350-900 at Lufthansa Technik Malta in May 2024.
The recently signed multi-year agreement will see Malta take on full responsibility for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of SAS’s Airbus A350 fleet.
The contract covers scheduled base maintenance checks at two-, four-, and six-year intervals, underscoring Malta’s growing role as a strategic hub for international carriers.
SAS’s A350 fleet – introduced in 2019 – currently comprises four aircraft, primarily deployed on long-haul routes linking Copenhagen with key destinations across North America and Asia. These aircraft are central to SAS’s intercontinental network and will now benefit from the MRO services delivered from Malta.
“SAS and Lufthansa Technik already have a long-standing business relationship, with a wide range of services from an Aircraft Production Inspection Program (APIP) for the airline’s A320neos to a Total Component Support (TCS) and engineering support (Part-21) for its entire fleet,” the Lufthansa statement read.
It concluded: “The new base maintenance contract also provides for a certain degree of flexibility for supplementary services, such as aircraft modifications during the layovers”.
