Lidl Malta has donated €10,000 to The Good Shepherd Sisters – Dar Merħba Bik to support the organisation’s work assisting women and children fleeing domestic violence.
The contribution was announced to coincide with International Women’s Day and represents a continuation of the supermarket chain’s support for the NGO. The funding will help cover core operational costs and essential services provided by the shelter.
Dar Merħba Bik has reported an increase in demand for safe housing and professional support, placing additional pressure on its resources. According to the NGO, the donation aims to help address these challenges and ensure the continuation of services for individuals seeking refuge from domestic violence.
Lidl Malta Director Owen Micallef said the partnership with the organisation has highlighted the difficulties faced by many women and children in the community.
“Our partnership with Dar Merħba Bik has shown us the harsh reality of the struggles many women and children face in our community,” he said. “While we are proud to provide this financial support, we also recognise that the needs of the NGO are vast. We are standing with them not just as donors, but as advocates.”
Dar Merħba Bik and Dar Santa Bakhita operate under the Good Shepherd Sisters and provide shelter and support services to women and children who are victims of domestic violence. The initiative is inspired by the motto “One person is worth more than the whole world,” attributed to St Mary Euphrasia, founder of the Good Shepherd Sisters.
The organisation aims to provide a safe environment and professional support to help individuals rebuild their lives with dignity.
Lidl Malta said the donation forms part of its wider social responsibility efforts and encouraged businesses and members of the public to support organisations assisting vulnerable members of society.
Lidl Malta began operations locally in 2008 with three stores and has since expanded to 11 outlets across the island. The company forms part of the Schwarz Group, a multinational retail group headquartered in Germany with operations in 31 countries.
