Late artist Ray Pitrè's latest work, Figure in Rods, now forms part of MICAS' permanent collection.
Minister for the National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, inaugurated this first exhibition by a Maltese artist at the Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS).
"We are at a significant moment in our country's cultural journey, as we commemorate Ray Pitrè's legacy and strengthen our commitment to showcasing Maltese art on the international stage through MICAS, our new museum dedicated to contemporary art.
"Mr Pitrè's recent passing reminds us of the extraordinary talent that defined him and his unique artistic identity. From the beginning of his pioneering work in the 1960s, he explored various forms of artistic expression, often creating profound works from materials discarded by society," said Dr Bonnici.
He further remarked that with Pitrè's final masterpiece, Figure in Rods, now permanently installed at MICAS, the late artist embodied the innovative spirit and artistic excellence that warrants international recognition.
Another key highlight of the inauguration was the development of MICAS' programme. Dr Bonnici stated that this programme would ensure current and future generations of Maltese artists receive the support, recognition, and international platform they deserve.
The exhibition was introduced by MICAS Executive Chairperson Phyllis Muscat, Artistic Director Edith Devaney, and art historian Joseph Paul Cassar.
Ms Muscat commented, "It is an honour for us to become the custodians of Ray Pitrè's final work at this early stage of MICAS' mission to bring international contemporary art to Malta, while also showcasing Maltese contemporary art to the rest of the world. With the permanent placement of Figure in Rods, MICAS celebrates the artistic legacy of one of Malta's finest artists and underscores our mission to foster dialogue between Maltese art and the international artistic community."
