The excellent relations between the UK and Malta go back many years. One could argue they are among the oldest and strongest that Malta has built and nurtured. Some might raise an eyebrow at the thought of seeking opportunity in what could be seen as a saturated landscape. However, long-standing business leader Joseph Zammit Tabona has been promoting Malta in the English capital for the best part of the last half century.

“In the post-Brexit scenario, Malta may offer an opportunity of access to Europe, which could interest UK-based businesses,” explains Mr Zammit Tabona. “Malta offers a suite of advantages for investors, which goes beyond the tax regime. Stability is paramount for prospective investors when choosing a jurisdiction to set up shop in, and Malta can boast a very stable economy, together with sharing the same language, accessibility, and a general ease of doing business. As a Commonwealth country with a natural understanding of British business culture, Malta can act as a practical link between UK firms and the wider European Union.”

With this vision leading him, Mr Zammit Tabona has been nurturing an event that has now become an annual tradition. Held at the prestigious Mansion House in London, FinanceMalta hosted a networking reception for leaders from the business community, aimed at promoting Malta in the British capital.

“The event has grown from strength to strength since the first edition in 2023. Interest is as high as it has ever been, both from attendees as well as interested sponsoring organisations,” Mr Zammit Tabona explains. A respected businessman, former High Commissioner to the UK, and long-standing special envoy for business promotion himself, Mr Zammit Tabona has spent decades deepening Malta-UK economic ties.

“We managed to bring together leading figures from banking, business, audit firms and professional services, continuing to position Malta as a strategic and attractive jurisdiction for UK-based companies looking outward,” he reflects.

This year, close to 500 participants filled the prestigious Mansion House, confirming the rising interest in Malta among London’s business community. Personally leading the fundraising efforts, securing sponsorship from prominent organisations across London, including major banks, audit firms and leading businesses, Mr Zammit Tabona sees in the event an opportunity to thank those who already do business with Malta, but also to open the door to new collaborations.

Keeping it light on its feet, the evening featured two short addresses, one by George Vella, Chair of FinanceMalta, and another by Minister for Finance Clyde Caruana, who provided the context, and outlined the opportunities that exist for more collaboration. To further illustrate the case, a concise seven-minute presentation outlined why Malta should be considered a compelling destination for investment and business.

The reception provides a meaningful touchpoint for the sizeable Maltese community working in London, granting them access to distinguished venues and a direct link to home. For many, it is also an opportunity to renew professional connections and reinforce their role as informal ambassadors for Malta.

Mr Zammit Tabona is candid about his desire to see sponsors taking on a more prominent role in organising this event, especially given their glowing reviews and interest in remaining connected to the annual event, yet his passion for showcasing Malta remains undimmed.

“Even though you can describe Malta in detail as much as you want, nothing beats bringing investors over,” Mr Zammit Tabona insists. “No amount of explaining can replace jumping on a plane and bringing prospective investors to Malta. Nothing beats the experience of seeing and touching what Malta can truly offer first-hand,” he concludes.
