A huge palazzo in the heart of Mdina is set for a new lease of life, with businessman Justin Zammit Tabona and leading architectural practice AP Valletta joining forces on an ambitious restoration and conversion project.
The historic Palazzo Mangion, which dates back to the 17th century and spans more than 1,200 square metres, will be carefully restored and reimagined as a five-star luxury hotel, pending approval from the Planning Authority.
Mr Zammit Tabona, Managing Director of the Xara Collection, is no stranger to Mdina’s architectural heritage. The Collection already includes The Xara Palace Relais & Châteaux, the Michelin-starred de Mondion restaurant and the Xara Lodge events venue on the outskirts of Rabat.
Renowned for their expertise in heritage projects, AP Valletta has submitted plans for the restoration and adaptation of the palazzo. The proposal includes internal alterations, the introduction of a lift and other sensitive interventions to ensure the building’s long-term sustainability while preserving its architectural integrity.
The Malta Tourism Authority has already granted the development a five-star hotel heritage label, recognising the project’s alignment with Malta’s tourism vision.
Palazzo Mangion’s story stretches across centuries. Originally remodelled in the late 1600s by Canon Francesco Mangion, the 12th Signore di Nigret, the building incorporates the Chapel of Santa Croce – described by architect Edward Said as one of the finest surviving examples of late Gothic architecture in Malta.
Over time, the palazzo has served multiple roles: a noble residence, temporary quarters for nuns exiled from Portugal and even housing for RAF pilots during World War II.
With its grand salon spanning the width of the building, one of Mdina’s largest courtyards, richly decorated interiors and centuries of layered history, the property is regarded as “true gem in the city’s rich architectural landscape” by Realtor Prime International’s Bradley George.
If approved, the project will not only restore a Grade 1 scheduled building but also add a new dimension to Mdina’s luxury hospitality offering.
