The PX Tower in Paceville could surpass Mercury Tower as Malta’s tallest building if a newly submitted planning application is approved.

Project Landmark Limited, led by developer Paul Xuereb, has requested approval from the Planning Authority to add seven more storeys to the 33-storey tower that was granted a permit in 2023.

If endorsed, the building would rise to 40 floors, overtaking the Mercury Tower in St Julian’s, which currently holds the record at 33 floors.

The proposed development is located on Triq Santu Wistin, on the road leading to St George’s Bay.

The revised application seeks to increase the project’s overall footprint from 3,400 square metres to 4,120 square metres, extend underground parking facilities, and redesign the façade.

Two of the additional floors are earmarked for hotel-serviced apartments, while the tower will also feature a business centre, retail and restaurant outlets, and a publicly accessible plaza.

Other developers are also seeking to extend existing projects.

The db Group recently submitted a request to increase the height of its approved twin towers at St George’s Bay by seven storeys each.

The Superintendence for Cultural Heritage has requested an updated visual impact assessment to evaluate the effect of the additional height on Valletta’s skyline, the harbour fortifications, and Villa Rosa, a scheduled mansion. A previous study on the 33-storey version had concluded it would have no significant impact.
