On Monday, Malta mourned the loss of Joe Grech, a celebrated singer and cultural icon, who passed away at the age of 90.

Renowned for his contribution to Maltese music, Mr Grech was the first artist to represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest, where he performed the popular song Marija l-Maltija in 1971.

His Eurovision entry marked a significant milestone, as it was the first Eurovision song sung in a Semitic language.

His career was marked by several pioneering achievements. In 1960, he won the inaugural Malta Song Festival with his own composition, Vola Uccellino. The festival, organised by Żgħażagħ Ħaddiema Nsara, was held at the Radio City Opera House in Ħamrun.

Beyond his local success, Mr Grech toured extensively, sharing his talent in countries such as Italy, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.

A highlight of his international career was his 1977 performance at the Royal Opera House in Australia.
