The Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS) has been awarded international accreditation by the International Centre of Excellence in Tourism, Hospitality Education following a comprehensive institutional review and international audit visit.

The accreditation recognises ITS’s standards in tourism and hospitality education and confirms its standing among a select group of internationally accredited providers in the sector.

During the audit visit, evaluators commended the Institute for its strong integration with industry, innovative programme portfolio, and student-centred approach to learning. Particular note was made of ITS’s delivery of multi-level programmes from MQF Level 2 to Level 7, as well as its Bachelor of Science in Diving Safety Management, described as a forward-looking programme aligned with Malta’s niche tourism offering.

The report also highlighted the Institute’s blended learning approach, combining face-to-face, hybrid and online delivery, supported by the effective use of educational technology. ITS’s international partnerships in Europe and China were also noted as providing students with global exposure.

ITS Chief Executive Officer Pierre Fenech said the accreditation reflects sustained investment in quality and innovation across the institution.

“Recognition by the International Centre of Excellence in Tourism, Hospitality Education confirms that ITS meets the highest global standards in tourism and hospitality education, while remaining firmly rooted in Malta’s national skills needs,” he said.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg described the accreditation as an important milestone for Malta’s tourism sector and workforce development.

“This prestigious international accreditation confirms that Malta’s national tourism institute is operating at world-class standards and strengthens our country’s reputation as a centre of quality education,” he said.

Auditors also commended ITS’s leadership, student wellbeing support services, and graduate employability outcomes, noting that demand for ITS graduates continues to exceed supply within the tourism industry.
