Maltese firm Inguanez Architects have received a special mention in the Architizer A+ Awards for their project called Mosiac House.

The architecture company, founded by Nick and Riana Inguanez was “thrilled” for their Special Mention distinction in Architizer, a platform connecting architects with building-product manufacturers and showcasing innovative architectural projects worldwide.

Mosaic House is a modernist urban retrofit that transforms a vacant government building into a community center and LGBTQ respite shelter, preserving the local streetscape’s typology.

Retaining most of the original two-story structure, it adds a receded third floor, blending public engagement with private sanctuary through perforated masonry walls that transition spaces from communal to intimate. Inguanez Architects' design uses passive Mediterranean techniques, like vernacular facades and cane shading - for thermal comfort, while adaptable elements such as reed screens and personalised walls foster user interaction. By dissolving institutional aesthetics in favour of domestic warmth, the house creates layered, inclusive spaces for refuge, therapy, and community connection.

“The centre embodies a dual nature - the collective spirit of community through its outward-looking social impact approach; at the same time it is a sanctuary of introspection for vulnerable LGBTQ persons who temporarily seek refuge and receive therapy during their stay.”
