For more than two decades, pianist Edmond Zarb was a familiar and much-loved presence in the lobby of The Westin Dragonara Resort, where his music became part of the hotel’s identity.

His passing at the age of 81 has prompted tributes from the establishment, which described him as a figure who “filled our lobby and touched the hearts of everyone who passed through.”

In a message shared following news of his death, the hotel honoured Mr Zarb’s enduring contribution, noting that his performances spanned over 25 years. Week after week, year after year, his playing created an atmosphere that resonated with both guests and staff alike, leaving a lasting impression on all who encountered it. “A beloved presence,” the tribute read, adding that he “will not be forgotten.”

Beyond performance, Mr Zarb was also deeply engaged in Malta’s cultural and literary landscape. A former band member of the Armed Forces of Malta, he composed songs for a number of local artists, including Catherine Vigar, Renato, Marthese Tanti and Doreen Galea.

He was equally recognised for his contribution to Maltese literature, as he authored several short stories, essays and novels. Among his best-known works are Nina, Emma, and F’Tgħanniqa mal-Mewt, the latter of which was adapted into the television series Tgħanniqa.
