Grant Thornton Malta is the first and only (to date) locally accredited External Reviewer for Green Bonds, marking a key milestone in Malta’s progress towards sustainable finance.
The recognition positions Grant Thornton Malta as a leader in ESG-related assurance services and provides issuers with a trusted, independent partner in verifying the environmental credentials of their bond offerings.
Green Bonds are fixed-income instruments specifically earmarked to finance projects with environmental benefits, such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, or sustainable infrastructure.
Until now, Maltese issuers seeking to launch such bonds were reliant on foreign reviewers for certification and compliance with international standards such as the EU Green Bond Standard or ICMA’s Green Bond Principles.
With Grant Thornton Malta’s accreditation to act as an External Reviewer, the local market gains an accessible and reputable player capable of assessing Green Bond frameworks, evaluating project eligibility, and ensuring transparent use-of-proceeds reporting.
This development makes it significantly easier for Maltese businesses to enter the green finance space, while giving investors greater confidence in the environmental impact and integrity of local bond issuances.
Grant Thornton Malta’s role as External Reviewer for the €25 million Green Bond issued by the Water Services Corporation (WSC) highlights the practical impact of this accreditation. The WSC bond will finance critical water infrastructure upgrades aimed at long-term environmental sustainability.
George Vella, Partner, Transaction Advisory Services at Grant Thornton Malta, commented: “This accreditation reflects both our technical capabilities and our commitment to supporting Malta’s transition to a more sustainable financial ecosystem.”
