GO plc has officially declared Malta a “true fibre island,” having extended fibre connectivity nationwide – except for a few areas in Valletta, where heritage constraints and existing infrastructure limit installation.
The completion of the 13-year project was announced at a press conference held at GO’s Head Office.
Marking a national first, 371,000 homes across Malta and Gozo now have access to fibre services, enabling internet speeds of up to 10Gbps.
With over 1 million labour hours invested in construction and customer migrations, GO’s fibre journey began in 2012 with the first connections in Lija.
The final phase is nearly wrapped up in Valletta, culminating in the installation of 10,800 km of fibre-optic cable and more than 3,275 km of ducts and tubing across the island.
“Our purpose is to drive a Digital Malta, where no one is left behind. A bold vision to future-proof Malta with a robust and sustainable fibre network that reaches every home and business,” said Nikhil Patil, CEO of GO plc.
He continued: “We achieved this with an investment of over €100 million, and a huge commitment by our people to deliver significant benefits to the country’s digital economy. This milestone is not just a win for GO, but for every resident and business in Malta.”
Mr Patil also highlighted how 94 per cent of GO’s fixed line customers are connected to fibre.
Complementing this milestone, GO launched its fibre island campaign, while offering two new high-speed products for residential and business consumers.
Looking ahead, GO’s next achievement is to phase out copper connections, boost gigabit internet speeds, and help to drive a smarter, more digitally connected future for Malta.
The Minister for Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects, Silvio Schembri, also attended the event, describing it as a defining moment in Malta’s digital development.
