Medical Doctor and Director of St Mary’s Clinic Malta Frank Farrugia has successfully reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak at 5,895 metres, as part of a demanding fundraising climb organised with the Sigma Foundation.

The mission behind the ascent is to raise funds for an ambulance for Chiri Health Clinic in Uganda, a Catholic clinic run by the Sisters of the Poor that serves vulnerable communities where access to emergency transport can mean the difference between life and death. So far, €705 of the €5,000 goal have been donated

An ambulance will enable urgent patient transfers, allow medical teams to reach remote areas, and deliver critical care when every minute counts.

Mount Kilimanjaro, located in Tanzania, is the world’s tallest free-standing mountain and one of the most physically and mentally demanding climbs undertaken by non-technical trekkers. Climbers pass through five climate zones – from rainforest to arctic summit – facing altitude, freezing temperatures, and long summit.

Over the years, Dr Farrugia has worked in underserved regions including Guatemala and Peru, carrying out stem-cell procedures for patients suffering from chronic pain alongside missionary priests.

In Guatemala, this commitment extended beyond clinical work. Essential equipment, including a forklift, was donated to support Fr Anton’s work in delivering and managing vital supplies for the local community.

These efforts trace back to the early days of Dr Farrugia’s medical journey, when he spent time working with Mother Teresa.

To maximise the impact of the Kilimanjaro fundraiser, St Mary’s Clinic Malta, has committed to matching every euro donated by the public.
