With 1,800 employees at the Kirkop site, STMicroelectronics (ST) is one of the largest private employers in Malta and a prominent member of the Maltese community and economy.
The Kirkop plant has been in operation since 1981. It is a world-class assembly and testing plant, the largest of its kind in Europe, for over 1,200 ST products, serving clients that are leading global and technological innovation in automotive and consumer products.
These products use the most advanced chip packages, including MEMS sensors and packages for automotive applications, meeting the most stringent quality and reliability requirements for the performance, efficiency and safety of cars. Sixty per cent of its 1,800 employees, from over 50 nationalities, are operators, while 40 per cent are technicians and engineers.
It has a clean-room area of 20,000 square metres with high-volume manufacturing capacity: 2.7M units per day and advanced manufacturing under Industry 4.0 initiatives.
It forms part of ST’s global network of 14 manufacturing sites, with production in France, Italy and Singapore and test and assembly operations in Malta, Morocco, China, Malaysia and the Philippines.
STMicroelectronics registered revenue of $12.8 billion in 2021, from sales supporting the automotive industry and industrial markets as they transition to electrification and digitalisation, consumer electronics and peripherals, as well as communication infrastructure.
It is listed on the stock exchanges of Paris, Milan and New York (NYSE:STM). The company employs over 48,000 people globally.
ST is committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2027, the earliest anticipated date of the semiconductor industry, in addition to its long-running sustainability commitment.
