Alan Cuschieri, co-CEO at Calamatta Cuschieri Moneybase plc and CEO and founder of Moneybase, is stepping down as Governor of FinanceMalta.

“I have decided the time is right to step down,” he said, after four years in the post.

Mr Cuschieri said that he joined FinanceMalta in 2022 with one primary aim, “to lead the organisation's fintech agenda and put Maltese fintech firmly on the map.”

Set up in 2007, FinanceMalta is a non-profit public-private initiative that was set up to promote Malta as an international business and financial centre.

“I am proud to have facilitated and taken part in two first of their kind research studies, produced by Mastercard's advisory team: one mapping Malta's fintech ecosystem for the first time, the other covering the Maltese payments landscape. The studies ran to over 120 pages of national research and recommendations, with several local stakeholders contributing.”

He said that he also led the transformation of Malta's presence at Money 20/20, “from a modest showing to a national platform where Maltese companies and fintechs today champion the island's credentials.”

He expressed his thanks and appreciation to the entire FinanceMalta team and the wider stakeholders he worked with on various projects, panels and publications.

“Most importantly, I look back fondly on how the fintech sector in Malta has grown and matured in a short space of time. Malta no longer chases fintech. Fintech chooses Malta. I am grateful to have been part of this transformation.”

He said that he will not focus his energy on Moneybase and continue to serve the Financial Institutions Malta Association, which is a local association representing licenced financial institutions in Malta, as a board member.
