Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced the reopening of Malta’s ports and airport from Wednesday 1st July.

He did not provide further details as yet on the protocols surrounding the reopning of ports, but said this will take Malta on the road of genuine normality. He also said authorities will see that COVID-19 related protocols will not "go overboard" but will seek to be effective and straightforward.

The Prime Minister boldly said that the worst of COVID-19 is behind Malta, and that tomorrow, 1st June, protocols would be announced which will see businesses that have not been allowed to re-open to finally open their doors to the public, such as bars and gyms, on 5th June.

He said this day would mark the removal of remaining restrictive measures related to COVID-19.

He also announced that on 8th June, a multi-million budget, “the likes of which this country has not seen before,” will spur business growth and would significantly incentivise economic activity.

Prime Minister Robert Abela said that deposits in banks have “exploded,” that people are saving and that it is now time to spend and help the local economy get back on track.

"Statistics clearly show that COVID is behind us, so now this crucial time has begun which through this we start the road to complete normality."

He said Government was clear on the relaxation of measures, and refuted criticism that such moves would bring in a second wave.
