When discussing AI adoption in businesses, conversations often drift toward comparisons between artificial and human intelligence – or even the prospect of replacement altogether. While this is an intriguing and intellectually engaging angle, it tends to lead to academic or philosophical debates that offer limited practical business value. To uncover meaningful, value-driven opportunities, the first essential step is to position AI within the right context.

To help with this, Computime Business Software & FinTech CTO, Vince Vella, reflects on a perspective from distinguished physicist, Richard Feynman, who when questioned during one of his lectures once remarked that airplanes don't need to flap their wings to fly, yet they dominate the skies. The point is simple but powerful: success does not depend on imitation.

In much the same way, people often spend too much time debating how and to what extent AI mimics human intelligence. AI introduces a fundamentally different form of intelligence - one that does not think or behave "like us" to be effective. In fact, for many tasks AI might reach the same objective faster and better.

History offers several comparable examples. The steam engine redefined the scale of physical labour, even though it didn’t attempt to replicate the mechanics of horses. The calculator removed much of the error inherent in manual computation without imitating the way humans perform calculations. The internet broadened business activity to a global level, without mirroring traditional forms of communication. In every instance, the technology did not triumph by copying human capability – it succeeded by transcending it.  AI follows the same pattern. Its value lies not in replication, but in extending the boundaries of what is possible, enabling businesses to operate with greater efficiency, insight, and reach than ever before.

Fast forward a few decades and moving beyond rhetoric comparisons between AI and human intelligence, Dr Vella believes “we are at a point where many businesses have already undergone a first wave of transformation through the adoption of tech like ERP solutions, which fundamentally rewire and now form the backbone of modern organisations.”

ERPs focus on collecting and integrating data across all departments; the era of AI is about interpreting and acting on it.

Consider supply chain optimisation: the human mind is naturally limited by the number of variables it can handle simultaneously. AI engines analyse thousands of SKUs, multiple suppliers, different pricing, multiple lead times, different shelf lives, and automatically come up with the most cost-effective ordering plan.

In engineering, there is a limit on how many machine parts one person can monitor and maintain. AI continuously assesses real-time data from machinery, predicting failures before they occur, and shifting operations from a reactive “break and fix” to “predict-prevent”.

In Finance, AI has evolved beyond basic bookkeeping into high-velocity risk management, identifying anomalies and fraud patterns in milliseconds. In Sales and Marketing, the shift is toward hyper-personalisation. AI agents analyse customers’ behaviour in real time, triggering targeted offers or related products of interest. In Customer Service, AI is available 24x7, across languages, tailoring interactions and solutions to individual preferences.

This is not a replacement of the human element, but a profound augmentation of it - a powerful sidekick and work companion. Humans remain the architect of business goals, while AI becomes the ultimate executor, delivering outcomes faster and with a level of precision that exceeds human capability

In this context, AI acts as a force multiplier that pushes a business toward a new frontier of operational efficiency. It is not just about doing things faster; it is about achieving a superior level of competitiveness. Ultimately, this leads to the next level of growth, where expansion is no longer constrained by the limits of human hours, but driven by the exponential power of machine execution.

Undoubtedly, the organisations that will outpace others are those who possess the clarity to identify exactly how this intelligence can best be applied to their unique challenges, turning those obstacles into a permanent competitive advantage. This is the era of strategic AI technology application.

Driven by these principles, the dedicated team of specialists at Computime have already guided companies across diverse industries through this journey, helping them navigate the complexities of AI to achieve measurable real-world results. Our focus remains where it has always been - to deliver tangible business value.

Backed by deep-rooted experience in the local technological landscape, and a proven track record of implementing ERP and business solutions for the largest organisations in Malta, Computime is uniquely positioned to guide businesses into this next phase of growth.
