Fourteen academics from the University of Malta have been recognised in the Stanford-Elsevier Top 2 per cent Scientists ranking, a global list that highlights researchers whose work is most often cited by other scientists.

The recognition came through Elsevier’s August 2025 data update for 'Updated science-wide author databases of standardised citation indicators'. This ranking is widely respected and is compiled with the contribution of Stanford University professor John P.A. Ioannidis. Scientists are selected based on how often their work is used and referenced by others, placing them among the top 100,000 worldwide or within the top two per cent of their field.
