A three-year Sustainability Plan drawn up by Yachting Malta provides for the elimination of single-use plastic, less paper use, promotional materials composed of recycled materials, signs made of sustainable materials and the elimination of balloons and plastic confetti during events.

The plan was launched by Finance Minister Edward Scicluna and Transport Minister Ian Borg who both stressed the need to promote environmental awareness.

Prof. Scicluna highlighted the economic importance of the yachting industry in the creation of jobs and various trades and in bringing over quality tourists. Incentivising the sector is important because, in addition to giving pleasure to many families, it helps the economy move forward, he said.

Stressing that the health of the sea is a priority and congratulating Yachting Malta for taking the initiative to catalyse a positive change towards more sustainability, Dr Borg said he looked forward to seeing the different proposals within the plan falling in place. He encouraged the public and in operators both in the yachting sector and in any other industry connected to the sea to also make positive changes.
