Virtu Ferries Gozo and Gozo Fast Ferry, the two firms operating the fast ferry service between Valletta, Malta and Mgarr, Gozo since June 2021, have merged operations to offer the service under a newly formed brand name, Gozo Highspeed.

The new operation will launch from 1st July and indicates that both parties have concluded that offering a competing service is not a viable long-term option.

In a statement, the newly formed company said: “With years of experience in the ferry industry, Gozo Highspeed’s team of experts is dedicated to providing a top-notch service that surpasses expectations. Every aspect of the journey, from boarding to arrival, is meticulously designed to create a smooth and enjoyable experience for all passengers.”

“With an unwavering commitment to reliability, efficiency, and customer satisfaction, Gozo Highspeed promises to revolutionize the travel experience for both commuters and tourists,” the company said.

“Understanding the value of time for our commuters, Gozo Highspeed offers multiple daily departures, allowing passengers to plan their journeys easily. By minimising waiting times and providing modern facilities, Gozo Highspeed ensures a stress-free and comfortable voyage, delivering the comfort and convenience passengers deserve.

The company will also introduce two new offers, whereby travellers can obtain a return ticket to Gozo for €9.50 through their online booking platform, and Gozitan residents may obtain seven return tickets to be used within a week for €20.00.

Both companies will continue to operate their own ferries separately under the newly launched service, using one ticketing system and one ferry schedule.

Since the fast ferry service launched in June 2021, it has been anything but smooth sailing. One of the main concerns raised by MEP and former Prime Minister Alfred Sant was that the ferry line was operated by two competing companies. He questioned how such an operation could be profitable.

Furthermore, operators have slashed their schedules several times and called for subsidies in order to support operations due to concerns of viability. This has led to stakeholders such as the Gozo Business Chamber to call for the service to be recognised as an essential service.

Gozo Fast Ferries is owned by Bianch Group and Merrill Investments, while Virtu is the company behind the ferry crossing between Malta and Sicily.
